In todays workshop with jess, we learnt about print making. These are some of the keywords we have learnt :
Print making; the art or technique of making prints especially as practiced in engraving, etching, drypoint, woodcut or serigraphy.
Lino printing; a print making technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of lino is used for the relief surface.
Relief printing; printing from raised images, as in letterpress and flexography.
Brayer; a hand held tool used historically in printing and print making.
Texture; the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance.
Henna; a reddish brown dye made from the powdered leaves of a tropical shrub, used to colour hair and decorate the body.
At the beginning of the lesson, we first went through the health and safety rules, such as not to wear lanyards when rolling out our prints and to make sure everything was put away at the end of the lesson. After this we started practicing some designs in our sketch book called zentangles, to try and get some different ideas to use for our final piece. We did this upto break and afterwards, we started coming up with our final designs for our Lino prints.
I decided to do a henna design on a pair of hands so that I would be able to use this to create my 19th glossary page. I really liked my design, however when I began to carve it out I found it a little difficult to handle the carving tool, as I would apply too much pressure at times and end up carving out the wrong parts. Once I had completed carving out my lino block, I moved onto printing.
I first rolled out the ink onto a flat surface so that the ink wasn't too thick, I then rolled this onto my lino block so that it was evenly spread out, and placed it under a mechanical roller with a piece of paper over the top, so that it would print the pattern onto the paper. I repeating this method upto dinner and completed 10 lino prints, including 2 La poupées which means using more than one ink on the same print, and 1 chine collé I completed after dinner, which consisted of using one of the lino prints, and drawing over a certain part of the image, cutting it out from tissue paper, glueing it onto the lino print and re printing over the tissue paper in ink.
I really enjoyed this workshop as I found it quite therapeutic, however I think that some of my prints could have turned out better if I had used contrasting colours more.
