In yesterday's art class, we started creating our sketchbook for our new project Caro. My first page I created was to show what kind of industrial materials he uses. I made the page look like a book by using brown paper to create an aged look, and drew some of the tool that he would use to create his work such as, screws and spanners onto the page using pencil. Later that day i created a page, which included many different drawings of eyes, to show what my sketch book should look like throughout my project. I also did a paper making activity with one of my instructors kat, over a ballon, so that we could do create something with it later on during the project. The method of creating this consisted of using a board to scrape out wet paper from a  tray, making sure that there was an a reasonable amount, placing a piece of cloth over it and placing it downwards onto the table so that once you lift the board the paper is left on the cloth, which you can then place carefully onto a ballon to set. Unfortunately once I'd finished, it began to deflate later that day so that I was unable to use it.

Today I had my 3D workshop induction learning the health and safety regulations.
For all the equipment used, you have to take off your lanyards so that they don't get caught in anything, hair has to be tied back, wear strong shoes so that if anything falls it doesn't go through them, wear goggles so that incase of an accident your eyes are protected and hearing protection so that you are able to concentrate.
We learnt how to use a pillar drill, band saw, fret saw, bobbin sander, and a disk sander.
We first used the pillar drill to drill a hole into the middle of a piece of rectangular wood, making sure that we were holding the wood securely. We then used the band saw to cut out a circular shape, we had to place the table lock onto the band saw so that it was secure and in place so that we could push the piece of wood against it, giving it a clean cut. After this we had to use the fret saw to cut out a shape from the middle of the wood, we had attach the blade to the machine, making sure that it was in correctly, we then had to tighten the guard lock nut and close the guard so that it was safe to start. Once we had done this, we had to use the disk sander to sand the piece of wood down. Throughout this task, incase of any emergencies there was an emergency button on each machine which would automatically stop it.

YSP/ HEPSWORTH GALLERY

SUMMARY ON THE YSP/ HEPWORTH GALLERY contextual studies

Yesterday, my class and I went on our trip to the YSP and the Hepworth Gallery, to look at some of the 3D art work that other artists have created. I preferred the Hepworth Gallery over YSP, as the art work intrigued me more. The Hepworth Gallery also included some artwork from the artist Caro, who our next project is about. He uses materials from every day life like industrial materials such as steel, which creates an aged look, as it begins to rust. I think that the art work is based both on reality and imagination, as he is using everyday objects to create something unique and interesting, and because of this he also works on quite a big scale. From different angles some of the art work looked more interesting from different perspectives as, you could see how the piece of art was created and was pieced together. The art made me feel intrigued as it made me wonder how he came up with those ideas, also as the work was made from steel, you could see that it had began to rust, which he may have wanted to happen.
Throughout the day we also completed two 16 page sketchbooks, including drawings of the sculptures from all the different artists. At both galleries, a lot of the art work were created on a large scale, however at YSP it was mostly created by imagination, where as at the Hepworth Gallery it used both reality and imagination. I enjoyed the trip however, I didn't understand some of the art pieces there.
This is an example of Caro's work,
I found this piece quite strange, as I didn't really understand what Caro was Trying to show. In my opinion I believe that he has created this to show anything can be art. He used industrial materials and objects such as steel and spanners, which made me wonder if this had something to do with a past job of some kind before he became and artist and used things that he knew how.

These are some more of Caro's work and examples of other artists work:
this was the only female sculpture that I had found in the Hepworth gallery, which I really liked, because it was the only female sculpture, it stood out more.

This is another example of Caro's work, which is found at the Hepworth galley. These were created out of industrial materials, which made me wonder if it had something to do with a past job, so he was using the materials he already knew how to use. I quite like these, because he was using steel, it created an aged look as the steel would begin to rust, making them look older than they actually are.

This piece of art isn't very eye catching as there is no meaning to it, so it doesn't stand for anything, meaning it's just a plain object.

This is my favourite piece  from the other artists in the galleries, as it's more understandable than some of the others, as you can tell what the sculpture is meant to be. I prefer the figurine sculptures more than the abstract sculptures as I don't understand what the abstract ones are meant to represent.

This is another piece of Caro's work, which he created out of wood. I really like this piece as it is different to some other pieces I have seen; I think this piece looks more creative and interesting.

I really like this piece of art by Caro as it looks very creative, also using the bright colours makes the piece more eye catching, which makes it more interesting.

I don't particularly like this piece as it doesn't look like it took a lot of time to create. It doesn't seem creative enough  compared to some of the other art pieces as it doesn't really catch your eye.

I really like this piece of art as it looks quite industrial but creative at the same time.

Hands evaluation

1 / 1
Olivia Grain
16th October 2015                                                            Evaluation

Throughout this  project I have used Visual language in my Glossary pages and workshop outcomes by  including the keyword and definition of the 7 elements and 7 principles of art and design to create each piece of art (glossary page)  in a different way. I have also done this  for another 6 keywords given to me by my instructors from each different workshop, which includes; photography, ceramics, textiles, 3D and print making. All together I have created 20 glossary pages and 29 pages in my sketchbook using experimental application of different medias such as, Acrylic paint, Puff binder, Procion dye, Inks, coloured pencils, pens and even Photoshop. Everything I have done or created throughout this project has been blogged about on my blog page; oliviagrainsart.blogspot.com

I have found the experience of making my glossary very uplifting and educational, as learning about these terminologies has helped broaden my vocabulary. However, at times I could find it stressful, as I would find my self doing my art work most hours of everyday, and as it was my first project I didn't know what to expect, but it showed me that I can do it, even if I find it a little hard and the beginning. Despite this I enjoyed doing this project a lot, as it allowed me to show my tutor and instructors what I'm capable of.

I did a lot of research throughout the project such as, Primary research; taking photographs from my own observations and producing sketches/ drawings of them. Secondary research; creating Pinterest boards and finding images on the internet to help give me ideas on what I could create in my project. Artist research; researching artists such as Jasper Johns, Kathe Kollwitz and re creating some of their art pieces in the same materials they had used, and finding out what influenced and encouraged them with their career. My research has been quite effective and useful for my practical studies, as it gave me insight of what being an artist is about, and helped give me ideas for my project. To improve my research skills I would try and find more artist research from books, instead of just online, as books may be more accurate and could include something that isn't included on the internet.

During my time in workshops I have learnt many new skills, techniques and processes such as, In Textiles, i have learnt how to screen print using either Procion dye or Puff binder, a technique  used to print an image on different materials, by applying dye at the top of a screen, which  when rolled down the screen using a Squeegee prints the Image onto the material on the other side. In print making, I have learnt how to lino print, a process which consists of carving out an image onto lino, rolling ink out evenly onto the lino print with a piece of material over the top, whether it be paper or card and placing it through a machine, which rolls over it and when it comes out the other side the image had been mirror printed onto the material. In Ceramics, I have learnt how to use clay properly to produce a piece of art, which is more of a skill than a technique. In 3D, I've learnt how to create something to look like something else, which is known as abstract. However I found this the most difficult out of all the workshops to do, as I didn’t know how create something that didn’t look realistic. Also, in photography I learnt how to take professional photos, by adjusting lighting and settings, such as ISO.
Most of my workshop outcomes came out quite well such as my photography photos, as they looked quite professional and my ceramics work, which I really enjoyed, however I think this could have turned out a lot better if I had used a carving tool to include more detail. I don't think that my 3D work came out as good as I'd hoped as, they were quite simple and didn’t look very complicated, even though I found it very complicated.

Overall, I think that my portfolio is very effective as it shows both my strengths and weaknesses. I believe that I put all my effort into creating this portfolio and worked to the best of my abilities. The only thing I wish I could improve is my 3D outcomes, as this was my weakest point. This is what I would do differently if I had the chance, to try and push myself harder into making  something more artistic and creative. My definition of creativity Is something that is unique and different, something that no one has ever thought of before. I have learnt that creativity means having fun with what you are doing, and that anything can be art.

I found it both easy and difficult to work independently on this project, as it gave me freedom to do what I like, however I also found it a little difficult as there is only so much you can do with hands, and I began to run out of ideas towards the end of the
project.

I managed my time for this project quite well, as I set targets throughout each day of what I was going to start and what I was going to complete. I enjoyed creating my glossary most of all as this was my strongest point, and because drawing Is what I enjoy doing the most.

This is everything I have completed throughout this project:
