Creating final design sheet.

After creating my initial design sheets for my FMP, I decided that I wanted to create a Skyline that was evenly balanced, and that included some of the elements and principles of design such as, Emphasis; so that the Skyline would look more interesting and would help catch people's eye, Balance; so that everything seemed to be in the correct position and didn't seem to be misplaced, Form; to make sure that all the different styles of architecture helped form a different and unique Skyline that, if it were to be created it would be a one of a kind and stand out to others, Colour; which would once again help emphasise different parts of the Skyline due to the use of mixed media, and proportion; which would help the skyline look as if it has different layers building it up.

This is the final design that I have created for my Final piece, which is created from 16 separate drawings that is going to look like a panoramic view. However, as I have decided to create such a long Skyline, I didn't have long enough paper, therefore I had to glue 2 separate pieces of paper together, so that it was able to fit the whole design onto the sheet of paper. The final piece is going to have a blue background to try and create a sky effect to make it look more interesting also, as this design was created from just photocopies of my sketchbook; I will be recreating each of the 16 drawings again, but of better quality and colour. I will be creating this using different medias including, HB Pencil, Graphite, Coloured pencil, Pen, either acrylic paint or ink for the background and even different types of paper such as plain white paper and parcel paper.

Creating initial design sheets

When starting my inital designs for my final piece, I wanted to bring all of my primary and secondary research together, including my artist research. I decided to photocopy my best research from my sketchbook and began to collage them together to see what they looked like. I also tried to mirror the designs, which I really liked the idea of, however if I had chosen to recreate a mirrored design for my final piece, I wouldn't have time to complete it.

For the first 4 designs, I tried to balance them by using a mirror so that it had a symmetrical image of the the layered skyline. However, when creating these I felt that a skyline should be seen more like a silhouette instead of a reflection. I also used a repeat pattern which I decided to develop further, into a panoramic skyline, as I think it worked really well and I like the idea of the skyline repeating itself.

Continuing on with my initial designs, I created multiple panoramic skylines to show my development. Some of these designs were quite simple and others were more built up. I also created some designs that were evenly distributed to create an evenly balanced photo and others that were more heavily balanced towards one side of the skyline, such as design no'7 where there is more happening on the left side of the skyline then there is on the right side, where as design no'9 is quite evenly balanced on both sides and looks more like an actual skyline.

Pages 51- 55 in sketchbook.

This is the cover page to show who the next artist was that I researched. I decided to research Thomas Heatherwick, because I like how he creates a  piece of art work that is more than just a piece of art to people, as they may have a different purpose such as the rolling bridge and East Beach CafĂ©.

Page 54:

This is 'The Rolling Bridge' that Thomas Heatherwick has created. I've chosen to recreate this as I like the form of it and the use of geometrical shapes found within the structure. To recreate this drawing I have used a 4B pencil to try and recreate the same effect as the structure itself. I also chose to draw this part of the image as it looks more complex than the other two sections of the picture. I feel that this could have turned out better if I had chosen one of the other sections to draw as it was a little complicated to re create due to the perspective of the photo.

Page 55:
This is another example of Thomas Heatherwick's work, which I have decided to recreate. I've chosen this piece of work as this structure also includes geometrical shapes within it and I feel that it looks quite unique and stands out within its surroundings. This drawing looks quite similar to drawing above however, this drawing was recreated using graphite. I feel that this could have also turned out better as the quality of the drawing doesn't look as good as some of the other drawings within my sketchbook.  If I were to do this again, I would use a different media such as oil pastel to whether this would make the quality of the drawing better.

Creating artist research sheets

For my first artist research sheet, I based it around the art deco movement as a lot of my sketchbook research is similar to this. Also, the Art Deco movement is featured a lot throughout the architecture in New York; because of this I decided to draw the chrysler building due to the use of geometrical shapes and reapeated pattern that works its way up the iconic building.  This also helps me as it links to my primary research in my sketchbook from my previous college trip to New York.
To create this design sheet I used graphite to try and create a metallic effect on the building, which I think works really well. To help emphasise the the shape of the building I created darker, thicker lines on the outlines of the shapes to make them stand out, and I also used a rubber to highlight where the light would hit the building.

For my second design sheet I created more research on Thomas Heatherwick, who is currently designing the garden bridge in London. I decided to base it around Thomas Heatherwick, to expand my research I did on him in my sketchbook to show some of his other work that he has created such as the East Beach Cafe he created in Little Hampton.

To create this design sheet, I used coloured pencils to try and create a 3D effect. I used lighter and darker shades of the same colour to make each shape look like its over lapping the other by creating shadow. I also used coloured pencils to create a smooth texture, like the sculpture itself. I wanted to recreate this image as the photo has good perspective of the sculpture and shows that it continues into the distance.

Pages 41-50 in sketchbook.

Page 41 & 42:
This is an image that I have taken of a church on a day out in Manchester. I created this drawing over two pages so that I was able to draw the image on a bigger scale. I used coloured pencils to create this, I was quite Subtle with this drawing so that the darker colours would stand out more on the main parts of the building.  I wouldn't change this drawing as I feel that it has turned out quite well.

Page 43;

This is to show where my book research starts within my sketch book. I feel that this could look a lot better if I had done the writing a lot neater or even in a different style font.

Page 44:

This is the first drawing that I created from my book research. I chose this image due to the shape and form of the structure. To create this I used graphite to try and create a steel effect which I think turned out great. To create the draker tones in the drawing I pressed onto the graphite harder so that it emphasised the building and I also used a rubber to help higlight certain parts of the drawing.

Page 45:
This is another drawing that I have created from my book research. I chose this image as I feel that the colours contrast and work really well together . I also chose this as the tiles reminded me a little of an animals scales. I used coloured pencils to create this and it had turned out to be one of my favourite drawings as it includes a lot of detail and I feel that this media has worked really well for this drawing and I wouldn't change this. I used a darker colour to create shading on the tiles so that it looked 3D and looked as if the tiles were over lapping each other.

This is this cover I created for my wentworth primary research, using a photo that I have taken of wentworth church.

Page 48:
I decided to recreate this image due to the perspective that the photograph was taken and also because it uses a lot of detail and geometrical shapes within the building. To recreate this I used coloured pencils, which I feel works really well. I used quite a neutral colour and dark Browns to try and create a brick effect in the building which I really like as you can see all the detail within it. I also used a very strong blue to create the Windows on the building to help and emphasis. To emphasise the building even more, I also used a black to outline certain parts of the building so that they stood out more.

Pages 31-40 in sketchbook.

Page 31:
This is the first page that I have created on the art exhibition that I visited in London. The exhibition '  creation from catastrophe '  showed different architectural projects on how architecture can help rebuild communities due to a man made or natural disaster, such as earthquakes and tsunamis.

Page 32:
The first project  talks about the effects of the Tohuku earthquake that hit Japan in 2011, and ended up resulting in an ensuing tsunami. This project  was designed by 5 architects that wanted to make a difference in people's lives, not just for them but for the next grneration who were to live there. These architects were, Toyo Ito, Riken Yamamoto, Hiroshi Naito, Kengo Kuma and Kazuyo Sejima.

Page 33:
The second project designed by the architects Toyoto Ito, Kumiko Inui, Sou Fujimoto and Akihisa Hirata, talks about the tsunami that hit Japan in 2012. This was designed on a hill side so that residents would be able to watch over their cities rebirth. This project was also awarded the Golden Lion award for best national participation in the Japan pavilion at the at the 13th Venice architecture exhibition in 2012.

Page 34:
The third project designed by Shigeru Ban and his humanitarian relief organisation voluntary architects network, talks about the Nepal earthquake in April 2015 which flattened entire villages. After this devastating disaster, a month later there was a major after shock which made matters worse for the already fragile infrastructure. Visiting this exhibition wasn't really what I expected however this still helped me understand more about the structure of architecture and different ways that it can be used.

Page 35:

This is the cover that I created for my primary research on London using a panoramic photo that I had taken of one of the buildings that I walked past.

Page 36:
This is the  first drawing that I created on my London primary research. To create this drawing I used coloured pencils which I think worked really well as you can see a lot of detail within the drawing. I used lighter and darker colours to help add contrast to the drawing. I wouldn't change this as I feel that the drawing has good quality.

Page 37:
I chose to recreate this image that I have taken of the Big Ben as I feel that it was taken at a good perspective and is on a slight angle.
I wanted to try something different with this drawing, so I decided to use charcoal to see what kind of effect it has as I hadn't used this yet throughout my research.  I really like the effect this as created as although the drawing is s little messy, I feel that this works well as it is quite a simplified drawing.

Page 38:
For this page I recreated an image that I had taken of the London eye. I used pen to recreate this drawing as I liked the effect it  had created on previous drawings throughout my sketchbook research. I feel that this drawing turned out really well; the only thing about this drawing was that it took a really long time to create due to the use of media I had chosen to use. I wouldn't change this drawing as I feel really happy with the outcome.

Page 39:
This is the cover photo that I created for my Manchester primary research using an image that I had taken of the view of some buildings in the distance.

Page 40:
This is an image that I had taken of a pub on that I had found on my trip to Manchester.  I decided to recreate this image as you can see two very interesting buildings at the same time due to the perspective I had taken the photo at. I recreated this drawing using coloured pencils, however I don't really like this drawing as I feel that the quality isn't good enough. If I were to do this again I would try and use a different media such as oil pastels to see if it would create a better effect.
