distinction doors evaluation

Olivia Grain     Distinction Doors Evaluation

To analyse the requirements and parameters for this project I created a mind map, showing what I needed  to do to complete each criteria for example, unit 1.1 Analysis, I had to set daily targets, complete independent study at home and think about time management throughout the project. Unit 1.2 Research, I had to complete primary, secondary and artist research; including a Pinterest board on doors. 2.1 Planning, I had to set daily tasks and keep up with time management. 2.2 Practical skills, I had to finish sketchbook work and think of what to include in my door designs. Also, to complete unit 3.1 on going analysis, I had to do weekly blog entries and sketchbook annotation. I have also created a mind map on the target audience for this project which is 25+, stating what kind of things the clients are into such as watching design programmes like 60 minutes makeover, grand design and what they do in their free time, such as reading interior design magazines.
I think that my research is quite effective as it all links together. jmcompany with the he themeto do with nature to shps of the bars  cages, i  of  family and friends doors, and photos of nature   My secondary research works really well as it shows what kinds of doors already exist, which is essential. For the theme ‘Let the outside in’ I created a collage of images to do with nature, which shows what kind of things I could have used in my door designs, which I am to present to the company.
My primary research also works well as it show that I have taken that step from looking at existing doors  to taking my own photos of family and friends doors, and photos of nature which I could include in my designs. To create my primary research of nature I went to the Wentworth garden centre, to take photos of the gardens there. They also have a pet store, where I was able to take close up images of birds, however as they were in cages, I had to try and fit my camera lense between the gaps of the bars so that I could get a clear image, which I found a little difficult.
My art Movement research on Art Nouveau and Art Deco is really effective as it has influenced my final designs. I used my research from Art Nouveau, to simplify some of the designs in my sketchbook to come up with my own design for one of my contemporary doors.

I was influenced by different parts of nature; birds, trees, flowers, all of which I have interpreted into a final design.  I have found it quite easy to design for this specific target audience, as it has given me a variety of things to think about, whereas, if it was for an older age group I wouldn’t be able create some of the designs  that I have done for this project.  Every design that I have created all has a similar style, as I wanted them all to look unique and modern, and they are all made from wood. However, the colours of the designs are all different; some are quite bright and colourful such as orange and pink/ purple, whereas others are quite dark using colours such as black and blue, depending on what kind of design it was going to be such as, my tree design I did black as trees can sometimes look quite mysterious. Also, as we were unable to use coloured glass, I created my designs so that the pattern/ image would be created in frosted glass so that it still looked creative.
I haven’t had any difficulties creating these designs, apart from coming up with the initial designs which I found quite difficult as I didn’t know how to bring my research into my designs. I overcome this by simplifying different drawings in my sketchbook. When creating my sketchbook, I have used coloured pencils to draw some of the images, so that it was easier to blend colours. I have also inks and acrylic paints on my final design sheets, which I think I have gotten better at, as this was one of my weaker points.
I have managed my time really well throughout this project, as I have managed to finish everything that is required for my deadline. I have done this by taking work home and doing more independent study, to make sure that I didn’t fall behind with any work. I have found it quite interesting working for the company distinction doors, as it is something I’ve never done before. However, I also found it quite difficult as you are working for a specific deadline and cannot fall behind.
I have prepared for my presentation to the company by writing things down that I would like to say and practicing saying them to a family member.
